Based on the self-evaluation maintenance theory, present study was investigated the mechanism
of linking self-esteem to jealousy through positive coping style and negative coping style. A total of 492
college students participated in this study. The results indicated that:(1) There is a significant negative
correlation between self-esteem and interpersonal jealousy and negative coping styles, and a significant
positive correlation with positive coping styles; (2)The self-esteem significantly negatively predicted
interpersonal jealousy, and negative coping style significantly positively predicted interpersonal jealousy
and social competition jealousy; (3) The negative association between self-esteem, interpersonal jealousy
and social competition jealousy was mediated by negative coping style and positive coping style. The
present study concluded that the effects of self-esteem on jealousy via positive coping style and negative
coping style. The results of this study validate the theory of self-evaluation maintenance. It helps us
to understand the relationship between self-esteem and jealousy deeply, and provides theoretical and
empirical evidence for educators and consultants to intervene and prevent jealousy
