Objective: This study explored the career development of psychological counsellors. Methods: On account of learning the career choice motivation and career development of psychological counsellors, 13 experienced psychological counsellors were interviewed in-depth. The grounded theory and Nvivo11 software were used to code the interview transcriptions. Results: A total of 3 main axes and 11 categories were extracted, main axes including self, others and social environment. Categories in the self axis were self-awareness, self-development, self-persistence, altruistic tendency, altruistic behavior and internal experience; categories included in the others axis were important others, peers and clients; the axis of social environment included market orientation and industry orientation. Conclusion: A theoretical model of career choice and maintenance process of experienced psychological counsellors was preliminarily constructed in this study. It means in the social environment, the career of psychological counsellor is extended around change, both self and others changed from the selection stage to the maintenance stage. At last, the value and limitation of this study were discussed.
