“Teacher, I’ve started to look forward to the future.” — Reflections and Guidance on the Psychological Distress of a University Student with Obsessive Symptoms
Guided by the core philosophy of Taoism, “Let nature take its course and act as it should be”, seven sessions of psychological counseling over a ten-week period were conducted for a university student with obsessive symptoms using the method of exposure and response prevention. Baseline and postcounseling assessments of symptom severity were conducted using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The results indicated a reduction in obsessive symptoms, a decrease in depression scores, and an improvement in social functioning following the counseling. This paper provides a detailed record of the counseling process, analysis of key points of the case, intervention strategies and measures, as well as insights and experiences gained.
