Romance of Western Bower by Wang Shifu was belled as the “greatest masterpiece in the world” and occupies an important position in the history of Chinese literature. The translation method of social semiotics plays a guiding role in the understanding and expression of meaning. It’s an effective and practical approach to translation, and has a significance role in guiding the study of English translation of literary works. This paper will use the tree principles of social semiotic to evaluate and analyze the translation of Xu Yuanchong in the book of Romance of Western Bower, and select the translation examples in the book to discuss how Xu Yuanchong reproduced the designative meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning contained in the cultural content of the original text by using the translation method of social symbols. It is hoped that the analysis of this paper will provide translators with more references on translation strategies, so that the Chinese classical culture can be better spread in the worldwide.
