This study used interview method to interview 10 counselors from four universities in Hubei Province, aiming to deeply study the difficulties faced by university counselors in helping students with psychological problems, and explore countermeasures to solve these difficulties. The interview results indicate that college counselors generally feel powerless when helping students with psychological problems, mainly facing the following difficulties: (1) Some students do not trust counselors and cannot communicate honestly; (2) Some parents of students cannot face up to their psychological problems and cannot cooperate with the school to help them together; (3) Counselors do not know how to deal with students’ intense negative emotions; (4) Some counselors are unclear about the standardized process of assisting students with psychological issues. The following strategies are proposed to address the above difficulties: develop and implement a sustainable and targeted training program for counselors’ mental health and crisis intervention. Regular mental health and crisis intervention training is conducted annually, including one theoretical knowledge training, one practical skills training, and one case study. Provide training on the standardized process of psychological crisis intervention for new counselors, and provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills training for experienced counselors. Theoretical knowledge includes knowledge related to psychological diagnosis and counseling, legal knowledge involved in assisting students with psychological problems, and practical skills include empathy techniques, group psychological counseling techniques, home school communication skills, psychological stress relief, emotional management, etc.
