Objective: To understand the impact and underlying psychological mechanisms of intolerable uncertainty on social anxiety among college students. Method: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 825 college students using the Intolerable Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12), the Interaction Anxiety Scale (IAS), and the Self Care Scale (SCS). Result: The correlation results showed a significant correlation between intolerance of uncertainty and self-compassion and social anxiety; The intolerance of uncertainty is significantly positively correlated with social anxiety (r=0.48, p<0.01), and significantly negatively correlated with self-compassion (r=-0.37, p<0.01); self-compassion is significantly negatively correlated with social anxiety (r=-0.37, p<0.01). The mediation effect test shows that the intolerance of uncertainty not only directly predicts social anxiety in college students (β =0.38, p<0.001), but also indirectly predicts social anxiety through the mediation effect of self-compassion (β =-0.26, p<0.001), accounting for 20% of the mediation effect. Conclusion: The intolerance of uncertainty can directly affect social anxiety among college students, and can also indirectly affect social anxiety among college students through the mediating effect of self-compassion.
