The characteristics of “strict admission and leniency” in higher education,
which bring about a lot of educational problems. Contemporary college students show
some negative behaviors in their college life, such as being late for class, leaving early
or even skipping class, cheating in order to get excellent grades, etc. Many studies
have found that these behaviors are related to academic entitlement. This paper first
introduces the meaning of the academic entitlement. Academic entitlement refers to
the individual’s belief that he can achieve the desired academic results as long as he
makes appropriate efforts. Chowning and Campbell divided the academic entitlement
into two dimensions: external responsibility and entitlement expectations; Achacoso
measured college students’ perceived sense of entitlement in two areas (expectation
and negotiation); Kopp and colleagues built the AEQ on a strong theoretical
foundation, which included eight-item. Secondly, we introduces the influence of
the academic entitlement on classroom engagement, uncivilized behavior (such as
cheating), teacher-student conflict management. Finally, the role of warm or controlled
parenting style and self-efficacy for college coursework in college students' academic entitlement is introduced. In the future, it is necessary to increase the research on the
localization of academic entitlement, and exploring whether these problems also exist
in other groups and academic entitlement mediates or moderate the relation between
parenting style and learning behavior of college students.
