The study of the relationship between the psychological adaptability and mental health of PAP
grassroots new recruits is of crucial significance not only to the improvement of the overall psychological
quality of these new recruits but also for grassroots officials in the new era to explore new thoughts and
new way of management. Adopting the Symptom Checklist-90 (Scl-90) and psychometric measurement
of Adaptability of New Recruits compiled by Wang Rui, we have collected the data from questionnaires
conducted among the new recruits at a PAP grassroots unit. With Spss24.0 statistics software, we’ve
analyzed the results from approaches like descriptions statistics, independent sample T-testing etc. The
conclusion is as follows: (1) These new recruits demonstrate good psychological adaptability and mental
health except for a few. (2) Their psychological adaptability is in positive proportion to that of their
mental health. (3) There lies a distinct difference in coping styles with a clear advantage of recruits from
rural areas over those from urban cities. (4) Discrepancies are also obvious in recruits with different
academic backgrounds in terms of coping styles, identification of military environment as well as physical
and mental symptoms. The higher their education is, the less adaptable they appear.
