Objective: To investigate the association between neuroticism and internet
addiction and the mediating role of immersion and self-control. Method: A total of
433 college students were surveyed by NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Chinese
Internet Addiction Scale’ Revision (CIAS-R), Immersed Tendency Questionnaire
(ITQ), and Self-Control Scale (SCS). Results: (1) Internet addiction were positively
correlated with neuroticism and immersion, while negatively correlated with selfcontrol; meanwhile, immersion and self-control were negatively correlated. (2)
Immersion and self-control played completely mediating role between neuroticism
and internet addiction. Specifically, the mediation effects contained three paths: the
separate mediation effect of immersion and self-control and the chain mediation
effect of immersion and self-control. Conclusion: Neuroticism, internet addiction,
immersion and self-control are closely related and neuroticism can affect the internet
addiction through the mediating of immersion and self-control. This study uncovers
the mechanism underlying the relationship between neuroticism and internet addiction. The findings provide practical values for the prevention and intervention of
college students’ internet addiction.
