Objective: To understand the loneliness of the elderly in nursing institutions
and explore the relationship between loneliness and parent-child support. Methods:
The elderly in XiaMen and ZhangZhou were selected as the subjects. The UCLA
loneliness scale (UCLA-LS), the parent-child support questionnaire for the elderly
compiled by shen jiliang and the structured interview questionnaire were used.
Results: Descriptive statistical analysis showed that the average score of loneliness of
the elderly living in institutions was 39.25 (10.15), and the total score of parent-child
support was 99.5. The results of the difference test showed that there was a statistically
significant difference in loneliness scores between the high support group and the
low support group. The correlation analysis results of various dimensions of parentchild support and loneliness show that there is a general correlation, among which, the
correlation between emotional support and service support and elderly loneliness is
0.714 and 0.645, respectively, showing a strong negative correlation. Conclusion: The
loneliness level of the elderly living in institutions is higher, and parent-child support
has a positive effect on the loneliness of the elderly living in institutions. It shows that the parent-child support provided by children is of great significance to alleviate the
loneliness of the elderly in institutions.
