本文对美国特有用语“as safe as Fort Knox”“Yellowhammer State”“FlickertailState”和“Panhandle State”的语源进行了简要介绍,旨在为美国文化研究者提供参考。此外,本文指出了与这些美国特有用语相关的翻译错误或阐释性错误,并分析了这些错误产生的原因。此项实证研究发现,考证美国特有用语的语源有助于深入理解美国文化,能够避免文化误读,还可消除因主观臆断或望文生义造成的误译及误解。
This paper makes a brief introduction of the etymology of such Americanisms as “as safe as Fort Knox”“Yellowhammer State”“Flickertail State” and “Panhandle State” for the reference of those who do research on American culture. In addition, it points out some translation errors or misinterpretations concerning these Americanisms and analyzes the causation of them. This empirical research indicates that doing textual research on the etymology of Americanisms is conducive to an in-depth understanding of American culture, an avoidance of cultural misreading and an elimination of mistranslation and misinterpretation caused by subjective judgments or interpretations without real understanding.
