Based on the increasingly serious problem of climate change, and the lack of research and analysis of metaphors on the theme of climate change, this paper identifies, classifies and interprets the multimodal metaphors in Chinese and American news cartoons concerning climate change. In this study, 40 news cartoons about climate change from China and America are respectively selected as the analysis materials. From the perspective of critical metaphor analysis, the causes and consequences of climate change are taken as the target domain, while the source domain images related to climate change in cartoons are found out to interpret the emotional attitude and practical significance to be conveyed behind the metaphors. It was found that the source domain images of climate change in Chinese and American cartoons are highly similar, and the emotional attitude and practical significance to be conveyed behind the metaphors play an important role in helping readers interpret the viewpoints of news comics and calling on readers to pay attention to climate change issues.
