Tragedy is found in destruction and rebirth after destruction, while disease shatters the original order with a harsh gesture, intoxicating individuals and causing social upheaval. For the analysis of the causes of tragedy, the comprehension of good and evil in the midst of chaos and collapse provides significant evidence. This thesis therefore is to examine the relationship between illness and the causes of tragedy. It also examines how the imagery of illness in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Macbeth gradually shapes the plot and drives the playwright to the brink of insanity. The destructive effect of disease and its polarized alienation under the manifestation of individual and social aspirations is thoroughly examined from the perspectives of both personal illness and social afflictions.
