According to domestic and international definitions, translation competence of master of translation and interpretation can be summarized as bilingual competence and competence to implement machine translation. This paper analyzes the necessity of further investigation on translation competence of MTI: (1) State policies emphasize the importance of capability of international communication and cultivating external communication teams, which puts forward more requirements for the cultivation of translation competence of translators; (2) academic research on translation competence of MTI is insufficient, and the researches on related cultivation and thesis reflect that MTI has room for improvement; (3) cultivation of MTI doesn’t fully suit market demands. Meanwhile, this paper discusses the ways related to the research. Combining the definitions of translation competence at home and abroad, translation competence of MTI includes bilingual competence and competence to implement machine translation, which can be divided into several sub-competencies. This essay suggests that sub-competences of translation competence of MTI in Shanghai should be investigated through the cultivation of translation competence and the quality of thesis.
