Domestication and Foreignization in Translating Materials for International Publicity——taking Xi Jinping’s Discourse on the Governance of China III as an Example
As two methods of dealing with cultures in translation, domestication and foreignization have served as one heatedly discussed topic. Xi Jinping’s discourse on the governance of China acting as the symbol of a country’s policies, regime, attitudes and direction, is an important and direct access to China’s regime, policies and future action. And its English versions are peppered with a large number of Chinese culture-specific words. The paper intends to study the specific application of domestication and foreignization in English translation of Chinese culture-specific terms through the case study of Xi Jinping’s discourse on the governance of China III, and puts forward some suggestions for the English translation. For Chinese culture specific terms, domestication assists readers to fully understand the original text. While foreignization strategy is also beneficial to retain the Chinese culture and language characteristics. Domestication and foreignization are inseparable in the translation process, and translators should use them flexibly so as to successfully publicize Chinese characteristics.
