Language services refer to cross-language and cross-cultural information
transformation services and products, as well as related professional services such as
research and consultation, technology research and development, tool application,
asset management, education and training. According to the statistics of the State
Administration for Industry and Commerce in 2015, there were some 72,495 language
service and related service enterprises in China, with a huge market. Shanghai, as
the forefront of China’s economic development and innovation, and an international
metropolis with the most harmonious compatibility between Chinese and Western
cultures, relies much on the language service industry and talents. Language services
are needed to facilitate frequent international conferences and other international
Expo activities such as the World Expo, the Import Expo, and even the “going out” of
Shanghai-style culture. Accordingly, this paper investigates the current situation of
language service industry in Shanghai and explores how to cultivate relevant talents to
promote Shanghai’s economic and cultural development.
