In the context of the new era, due to the particularity of both individuals and groups in the physical education discipline, developing the core competencies of the physical education discipline is a complex systematic project. It not only requires theoretical support and knowledge accumulation in multiple disciplines and wide fields, but also has significant academic and practical value. Therefore, in this wave of educational reform, it is necessary to explore the current development status of core competencies in physical education disciplines. This study used the literature review to organize, summarize and analyze relevant data. The research results revealed that the development of core physical competences in the compulsory education stage presented the problem of imbalance in the integration of sports skills teaching; in high school education, physical education teachers needed to base their efforts on the specific teaching needs of physical education courses, the learning status of students and the actual situation of teachers, chose the best suitable sports teaching model; in the universities, it was necessary to adopt a diversified “teaching-learning” path and shifted from a “subject-centered” to a “student-centered” teaching model. In view of the fact that undergraduates majoring in physical education in universities are the main source of physical education teachers in primary and secondary schools. In order to better promote the core competencies of physical education disciplines, this study suggested that: (1) Strengthen university physical education and promote the development of students’ sports abilities; (2) Improve college students’ sports health awareness, develop stable healthy behaviors; (3) Promote the comprehensive development of college students’ sports ethics; (4) Pay attention to and enhance the core competencies of sports disciplines among college students.
