The Golden Cangue written by Eileen Chang is a classic novella in the history of modern Chineseliterature. However, it was not recognized as such in the English-speaking world when its English versionrendered by the author herself first came out. The reason for its failure to win recognition in the English- speakingis a hot topic discussed in academic circles, and many scholars attributed it to Eileen Chang’s English languageinability. Based on Roland Barthes’ text theory, this paper puts forward that The Golden Cangue is a writerly text,and defamiliarization is the artistic feature of this novella. It is mainly reflected in its innovation of content andform. This kind of text calls for the readers’ participation in production of the text meaning. In translating thiskind of text, the translator should try his best to keep the signifier chain of the original text and its unlimitedplural connotations unchanged so that the target readers can have the opportunity to enjoy the bliss in readingit.Therefore, the foreignization strategy adopted by Eileen Chang in her translation is appropriate. Foreignizationtranslation may not meet the standard of fluency and challenges readers’ reading habits, but it by no means showsEileen Chang do not have a good command of English.
