The vision of “a community with a shared future for mankind” is an important idea in China’s
construction of international discourse power. This paper analyzes news reports in American mainstream media
about this vision from four perspectives, namely its general situation in American media, text analysis, discourse
practice and social practice. It finds that this vision is rarely mentioned in American mainstream media and
does not capture the general attention of the US public. Moreover, this study illustrates that the wisdom and
connotation of this concept, such as its view of international power relations, common interests, sustainable
development and global governance, are generally distorted by the American media. This research provides an
in-depth understanding of the dissemination of Chinese discourse in the United States and proposes targeted
measures to enhance the international effectiveness of Chinese discourse, thus telling China’s story to the world
and conveying China’s voice.
