This article analyzes the irony used in Tom Sawyer’s Adventure from rhetoric and narrative aspects. Irony is especially used in characterization and plot design, and mainly resides in the non-linear development of the novel’s plots and the rhetoric devices (like hyperbole and paradox) adopted in the delineation of character’s thoughts, action and psychological activities. This article concludes that Mark Twain uses ironic narration to facilitate the overall text advancement and promote linguistic details. Ironic narration has played a vital role in revealing the unwholesome conventions, ameliorating the education method and focusing on individual growth.
