In 2016, Virtual Youtuber came into the public view, driving a large
number of related consumption and producing significant economic benefits. It
is observed that the proportion of female workers in this industry is very high.
However, previous studies about the industry have paid little attention to female
workers. Therefore, this study focuses on the female Virtual Youtuber group
by using gender theory, participatory observation method, statistical analysis
method, etc., and compares with the situation of male Virtual Youtuber to
analyze the unique “double face” which only appears to women in the industry:
on the one hand, the industry is friendly to women, and women are always
favored in recruitment, on the other hand, women in this industry are extremely
materialized and do not get enough respect about their independent personality.
In fact, this “double face” is the result of the joint action of patriarchy and
capitalism.
