One of the masterpieces of the Nobel prize-winning Colombian writer
Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez is Love in the Time of Cholera. The novel
tells the story of the relationship between Florentino and Fermina, which lasted for
half a century during the plague. The novel follows the traditional marriage of Juvenal
Urbino and Fermina, interspersed with Florentino’s romantic history and struggle,
and ends with Florentino and Fermina sailing for eternal life. As one of the most
influential writers of 20th century, his influence derives from his narrative skills. It is
closely related to his long-term use of geographical space and social space based on the
psychological space of characters. The new perspective of “space escape” reconstructs
the spiritual world and acquires self-knowledge for the characters in this novel.
