The year 2023 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Pan Zinian, a red journalist of
the Communist Party of China (CPC) who is praised by Mao Zedong as “the first newspaperman of
the CPC”. At present, relevant studies on Xinhua Daily edited by Pan have been very in-depth in the
academic circles, but there are relatively few studies on Masses Weekly, the only theoretical journal
published by the Party in KMT-controlled areas, which he founded and served as the editor-in-chief
and publisher (president). This paper is mainly about the hardship of Pan leading the comrades in the
editorial department, under the leadership of the CPC and the command of Zhou Enlai, to edit and
publish the journal in Nanjing, Wuhan, Chongqing and Shanghai, as well as comb through and discuss
the publicity of the Party’s theories and policies in these areas.
