Avoidance and Emphasis: Research on the Media Image of the Disabled from the Perspective of Normalization Theory —Take a Typical Report of People’s Daily for Example
Typical report is a form of news reporting with Chinese characteristics, which has a high
role of example demonstration and social integration. The article takes the typical reports of people
with disabilities from 2010-2020 in the People’s Daily as a research sample, combined with Bent Nier’s
normalization theory, from the sample number of news reports, publication location, article topics,
identities of typical characters, and disabilities Quantitative statistics are made on dimensions such as
the type of news report, the tendency of news reports, and news keywords.In addition, the article also
uses the random number table method to extract a sample of reports and conduct qualitative analysis
from the topic structure at the macro level and the vocabulary style at the micro level. Finally, the
article combines the results of quantitative and qualitative analysis to further explore the normalization
theory and the media image of persons with disabilities. The study concludes that under the guidance
of macroeconomic policies and other factors, persons with disabilities are mostly positive and positive
in typical reports. The media image of China, and the reports mostly focus on the normalization of
its economic conditions, which is inconsistent with the eight major aspects of measuring whether the
disabled have achieved normalization.
