Domestic violence is a long-standing social problem in Japan,
and its impact and damage on individual women, their families and whole
society is enormous. 2001 saw the introduction of the Act on the Prevention
of Spousal Violence and the Protection of Victims. On this basis, a series of
support measures were carried out. Under the law, Japan created a protection
order system, set up a counseling and assistance center for spousal violence,
and cooperated with civil organizations to help women victims with personal
protection, legal advice, and support for self-reliance. Although there are some
shortcomings in Japan’s support measures, it has achieved certain results in
protecting women’s rights and interests, which can be used as a reference for
solving the problem of domestic violence victims.
